Function:
The Welfare Department administers local public assistance in Laconia in accordance with State law. The department’s tasks include assisting eligible applicants lacking access to basic living necessities. Applicants found eligible as lacking access to basic living necessities are assisted on such expenses as food, prescription drugs, heat, electricity, and rent. The department will also provide the cost of other special, merited, basic living or working needs, as well as up to $1,000 towards the cost of burial.
The department counsels applicants and makes referrals when appropriate to other human service agencies. The department also represents the City for applicant-requested hearings.
