Function:
The Planning Department provides comprehensive planning services for the City including:
- community and economic development
- environmental planning
- grant writing
- housing initiatives
- development review
- recreation
- neighborhood planning
- special events
- transportation.
Planning Division
The Planning Department provides assistance to the Planning Board on:
- on the development and implementation of the Master Plan
- preparation of land use ordinances and regulations
- assists the Board on special committees (i.e., the Capital Improvement Committee)
- in review of proposed development (subdivisions, multi-family housing and commercial), and
- administers approved site and subdivision plan approvals, including site visits and construction monitoring.
The Planning Division also provides the following services:
- administration and enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance
- administers temporary land use approvals for Motorcycle Week. For information packets on land use for Motorcycle Week, contact the division by e-mail or phone
- provides professional and support staff and maintains records to the Zoning Board of Adjustment, the Technical Review Committee, the Motorcycle Technical Review Committee, and the Conservation Commission
- provides assistance to the City Manager and City Council on planning-related issues
- assists community-based groups in revitalization efforts, grant writing, and project implementation
Community Development Division
The primary objective of the Community Development division is providing safe, affordable housing for individuals and families with low and moderate incomes. Life safety issues and code compliance receive priority consideration as do energy efficiency improvements. The Community Development Division specifically implements the Housing and Community Development Plan through such funding mechanisms as the Community Development Block Grant Program, Housing Preservation Grants, internal revolving loan fund for housing assistance, as well as others.
